Student Services & Learning Supports
Student Services
LPES offers a wide range of student support services. We work very hard to meet the needs of every child. We have teaching staff dedicated specifically to do this and they include:
- Response to Intervention Teachers ( Tier 1 and Tier 2 student support)
- Learning Support Teachers (Tier 3 student support)
Our Student Support Team meets once in a 6 day cycle to review all student needs. We work together as a team to develop an intensive support plan for each student identified. We progress monitor the plans every 3 to 4 weeks through a consult meeting involving the core team. During consults, we work to ensure the plan is on track and make any adjustments that are needed. Parents are always involved in the process we work through for any child involved with our RTI or LST supports.
Other Student Services
Along with our school-based services, we also have access to several division-level support services including:
- School-Based Counsellor: our school has a designated school-based counsellor/family liaison. A referral is required and can be made through the school by teachers and/or parents. Parental consent is required before this support is put in place. Referrals to the school-based counsellor/family liaison can be made for a number of reasons and life circumstances including but not limited to: personal struggles, conflict with others, student anxiety, illnesses, death, separation/divorce, accidents, etc. Our school counsellor/family liaison works in our school full time. She will support K to Grade 3 students within the classroom for full class lessons and for Gr. 4 to 6 students, she will be able to support with individual sessions that will include goals (max of 8 sessions). There will be an option of more than one session during a school year and she will work with the student and/or their family during that time to set goals and resolve the area of concern or to put strategies and other supports in place.
- Speech and Language Pathologist: our school has access to two West Area Speech and Language Pathologists (offices right in our school). A referral is required and can be made through the school by teachers and/or parents. An assessment of the child is then scheduled and based on the needs of the child a program is developed to provide the necessary supports.
- Instructional Coaches:

The ELCC works with children (birth to 5 yrs.) and their families to provide: home/centre-based visits with the family, developmental screenings, helping parents set goals for their child, helps with referrals to other agencies, support/encouragement and resources for parents, play-based programs specific to their child, and helping with the child’s transition into Pre-K, Kindergarten or other suitable programs. A referral needs to be made, and can be made by anyone, parents included, providing the parent is aware that a referral is being made.
- Curriculum: our school has access to the West Area Curriculum Consultant. This work includes supporting teachers and students in the areas of curriculum outcomes and indicators; different instructional strategies; assessment among many other items.

This work involves supporting teachers, LST’s, Admin and students with diverse needs as well as directly supporting the RTI and LST in their work with students and the classroom teacher. The Instructional Coach – Diverse Needs collaborates with the school team to support student learning. This includes providing classroom-based strategies and interventions for Tier 2 and 3 students and intensive needs students, observing in classrooms to support planning, promoting inclusionary practices, providing self-regulation strategies and interventions, supporting recommendations from outside agencies and other supports and collaboration with inter-professional staff (Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Pathologists, Educational Psychologists, Counsellors).
- English as an Additional Language Consultant: our school has access to our school division EAL Consultant. Our EAL Consultant has developed an assessment kit that our Response to Intervention teachers have been trained to use and will assist our staff with newcomer student assessments. Our EAL Consultant will also come into the school to do observations and will provide recommendations for student success in learning the English language. Our consultant will also assist with developing student specific programing based on their level of English language usage.
